Deanna Thatcher: Nice ladies working there, but they wouldn’t let my daughter look at dogs, they said they don’t let people look at dogs because it’s “too stressful for the dogs” like why would people not be allowed to look at dogs? How are people supposed to adopt dogs. They said “just tell us the kind of dog you are looking for and we will bring one out that sounds like what you’re looking for” huh???? Um no!!

Gork Greg: This establishment adopts out pets that are chronically ill, and does not give any support to the new owner. They supposedly have a vet that comes in and check the animals on a weekly visits, but that is hard to believe with how sick the adopted animal is. This place is a terrible establishment for animals.

S Ross: Pet Refuge used to host adoptable pets. But they've become a weird pitbull sanctuary lately. They'll state on their FB that they have no room for stray cats or dogs, but they seem singularly determined to force ppl to adopt pitbulls, even if they have to lie by calling obvious pitbulls "lab mixes". I no longer donate to Pet Refuge of Mishawaka for this reason. I care for the well-being of actual adoptable pets, but as I said, Pet Refuge seems to be staffed by pitnutters.

jane ward: These folks, being volunteer or not, do not communicate. They deny your application even after providing them requested documents, saying the applicant never responded to their emails. I call BS as I have documented my whole experience with Pet Refuge. They must appreciate all the monetary donations but keep the same animals to lower costs. Sounds like a win win for someone internally.

Completely unprofessional and completely no communication at all between the rescue and the people coming to adopt the animals.

Tamiko Fidis: Because of the shortage of staff due to the pandemic you would think that these adoptions would be same day adoptions, but they're not. In 2018 my now ex boyfriend adopted 2 kittens from a shelter in Chicago all in the same day, we went to the shelter, he picked out 2 kittens he wanted, he filled out the adoption papers, he paid the fees and we were out of there him and I and the kittens on our way to his house, Easy, not out here, you all are doing too much.

Christie Gray: The person from heartland was rude when we adopted and then we found out dog had lime and possibly heart worms but the records we were given were confusing and incomplete. We retested she still had positive for lime but heart is ok. When I contacted the lady we got her from she was very rude. She claimed that the dog was treated but she wasn't a the nice lady that actually took care of our dog before adoption said she had no idea either. We love our dog but will never adopt from here again. Two stars are for the nice caregiver and for the dog. Heartland gets nothing from me

My suspicion is that they in fact are the mill, and run this "rescue" to avoid paying staff and for tax evasion.The "foster" and the "rescue" are not independent. They are sisters. Red flag there.Payment in cash only. Red flag there.The "kennel" has been cited by the AG office numerous times. Red flag there.If there were more red flags out, we would call it Beijing.I love the dog I got who needed a home but only later put the pieces together when I asked more questions.Do not support these people!

If so, this is the rescue for you!I rarely write negative reviews, but when it comes to the well-being of animals, I feel it is most ethical to speak up. I am just not sure how the animals at this rescue can be placed into good homes if the representatives refuse to communicate with applicants. Heartbreaking.

brit clark: Zero stars!!I submitted an application and within an hour I was contacted to setup a meet and greet. I immediately rushed to clear my work schedule- rescheduling several meetings and appointments. I’ve written numerous times asking to confirm a time. After the initial response , I’ve been ghosted. After trying to accommodate a last minute meet and greet. I was also more than willing to drive in from out- of- state, through a snowstorm , to meet this dog. The lack of communication and consideration is frustrating. Very unprofessional. This recuse is in need of better management.** as a previous shelter employee who was in charge of intake/ adoptions-better service/ communication with prospective applicants is possible, even when the workload is never ending.
