St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management District: what do users think?
David Finley: I was just told by a kind customer service rep that there was no way recycling could be picked up at my home for the next two weeks and that this guidance came from upper management. How does this group not have the resources to schedule a recycling pick up? Like, not even a week out? Even if I am able to offer payment? Terrible customer service. I'm super frustrated and disappointed with this service, which I assume is poor due to leadership not funding the service adequately enough. It should be better.
James Garner: Yard waste and organic is accepted at the dump out off of our limits parkway old Cleveland road
Thomas Jacobs: VERY friendly workers in a pretty awful looking location!
Johnny Skinner: The guy that helped me was unbelievably friendly.
Chris Freehan: Very friendly, effective and helpful
Dylan Hall: Great employees who do their job properly. Even when dealing with unreasonable customer complaints, such as nonstop calling and complaining, they remain professional. The fact that they hold onto cardboard even when their bin is full is also very nice. Keep up the good work!
Mary Jester: I am really disgusted with the St Joseph County Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste department. Over the past few years, I have taken items to the old facility when it was at 1105 E 5th St and I have called many times to ask questions about whether items should go into the weekly recycling bin or to the center or to the landfill. Based on many interactions that I have had with a variety of different employees, I feel that there is a pervasive attitude throughout the entire department of feeling annoyed at having to do their job and an expectation that residents should know exactly which items go where. I have dropped off items at the center, after calling to verify that I should take it there, only to be greeted by an employee who is already upset with me because they assume I have brought something I shouldn't, only to later realize that what I brought was supposed to come to that location. I have called about various items and the employees act like I am stupid that I would think that a particular item should be recycled. I always research each item before calling to ask to make sure it IS recyclable and after the conversation, I end up feeling like I know more about it than they do, even though I have no expertise in recycling. So far, I have seen NO signs that they CARE about taking care of the environment and trying to recycle what they can. I can understand they do not have the capacity to recycle everything that people in other parts of the country can recycle, but they could at least respond professionally and express regret that they can't recycle that item. But based on conversations with them, I feel that they really don't care about the environment. What they care about is how sorry they feel about themselves that they have to deal with the general public. They need to learn some customer service skills and realize that the general public does not know what items they do and don't take off the top of their head. They could also post a comprehensive list that covered the majority of the items that they take (not just an 8-10 item list), do not take, etc., and compile a list of items that are repeatedly a problem for people. (I have been over the lists they have posted and they are short. I also keep a printout handy of the list from the company that does my weekly trash & recycling pickup.) They could also have a flyer with these lists that they could hand out when someone brings the "wrong" item to the center. One time at the center, an employee told me stories of what another resident had brought the day before, making fun of her for bringing something she shouldn't have. I would like to add that before I write reviews, I always think carefully about whether it is fair and I try not to be nasty just because I am upset in the moment. I have been wanting to write a 1-star review for this department for a long time now and have thought carefully before posting this. I really hope they take my words to heart and make a change. We only have one planet and those of us looking to recycle items are just trying to take care of it and make sure it is a good home for generations to come. I wish they could find it in their hearts to care about it too. Otherwise, they should find a different line of work and let someone else work there who actually cares about the purpose of their department.
