Southold Dance Theater: what do users think?
Paul Zusi: Southold Dance Theater is the hidden gem of the South Bend. It is the hub of the arts for all ages (yes, ALL ages). I can personally attest to the brilliance of this school. I was trained there and brought up amongst true friends, forming bonds that will never fade. The current director and his wife (both longtime professionals with experience all over Europe and America) both teach the students with dedication, meaning every student gets the training that will best suit their situation. The training I received not only taught how to be a better person, but also led me on my way to starting my career. At age 18, I secured a spot with the Boston Ballet second company, and am now a part of a professional company. I have to admit that the opportunities I have had would not be possible without the dedication of my teachers at southold, all of whom cared for their students and spent their valuable time molding us into the best (and therefore happiest) dancers we could be. Southold is and will always be home to me, and I encourage others to spend a little time there to see how they like it!
David Martin: I attended the Southold's presentation of The Nutcracker at the New Buffalo performing arts center, 12/7/2019.Performances were at 1:00 and 4:30. We attended the 1 o'clock performance. Many performers were specific to individual performances. The performance featured Tchaikovsky's score with Calin Radulescu choreographing. The presentation was tuned to the South Bend area with the setting being on the Studebaker mansion. They also have a curious habit of renaming Clara. This year she was named Marie, and was played by Hannah Gregor in the 1 o'clock performance. The nutcracker prince was Ben Zusi in both performancesThe travel portion was performed by guests from the different countries coming for a visit and performing.I was in the restroom when they evidently asked people to refrain from taking pictures, so I have some pictures and videos to post. Not speaking just of my own, but don't forget to "like" reviews and photos you like. This helps the reviewer.
Jennifer D.: They offer a great drop-in adult ballet class in the evenings with all levels of dancers.
Michael Zusi: We have five kids, two girls and three boys. All have been trained to dance at Southold. Two are still there, three have graduated high school and moved on (the most recent graduate is a professional dancer). We have been at Southold since 2001 or so and have experienced three different Artistic Directors. These directors have surely been different from one another, but each has been (and in the current case, is) excellent. The care for, development of and attention to the dancers are wonderful. The training is thorough and rigorous, the casting for productions is thoughtful and appropriate (and we have had children both pleased and disappointed in the roles they got to dance). But the casting has always been fairly and painstakingly considered. The student dancers are both encouraged and challenged regularly. As a father, I have been quite pleased with the manner in which my sons have been and are being trained. Each also played basketball, soccer and baseball for years, but when they had to choose, they each chose to dance at Southold. Technical and artistic excellence are the goals that the students are taught to strive for and hard work is recognized, appreciated and awarded. Our association with Southold began 18 years ago when my eldest was 4 years old. We are still there, and happy to be. It's a terrific place.
Nora Zusi: Our family has been at Southold for 16 years. Our 5 children have completed or are completing the entire preprofessional ballet program. Each child on his or her own has chosen to remain in ballet over remaining in other sports. We have been there through 3 sets of artistic directors. Each AD has had a different personal style of running the program. But each has always, to the best of their ability, worked hard to create excellent dancers and an excellent program. It’s never easy for the kids to see, but the teachers love them and want them to learn to the best of their ability. What roles to give students and whom to move up to the next level has always been painstakingly, carefully thought out. For instance,, I appreciated that my younger son did not get lead roles -even though he wanted them - before he was strong and steady enough. I appreciate that the current directors valued the work ethic of my daughter, and recognized both her strengths and weaknesses. The current directors ( and past ones, too) hold the entire student body to be dear to them, and they make decisions that are reasonable. Given that, we have always taught our kids that in ballet you don’t question the artistic director’s decisions. You make the best of them you can. Hard? Yes! But imagine the mess if everyone were allowed to question the AD!! We have not found decisions to be random; they are always based on the AD’s best assessment of the entire program and the total abilities of each student .In the end, being at Southold has been one of the best opportunity for my kids to learn poise ( not just physical!), grace, picking up instructions quickly, how to deal with dashed hopes, physical and personal strength, creativity, challenge,. All of these have been so so valuable in their formation as human beings.Southold, from my long experience there, has always strived to be professional. It is very difficult to produce good dancers and deliver good dancing to the public. Southold does an excellent job of cf this. We are extremely fortunate to have such a good company in our relatively small town!!
Carolynn Hine-Johnson: I've had the wonderful experience of choreographing a classical Spanish dance for the Don Quixote ballet last year and also taught flamenco for a couple of intensives. The dancers are highly trained and very cooperative. Also, the directors and instructors are very nice and a joy to work with.
Tim Widerquist: My daughter danced at Southold for 10 years and hopes to become a professional dancer. Previous artistic director was excellent both in instruction and guidance. Current artistic director is much less supportive. Only a few politically connected students will get advanced instruction. Students are placed in levels seemingly at random (dancers who have been on pointe for 2+ years placed in classes with students who can't dance on pointe). Three years ago Southold was able to produce Nutcracker without hiring professionals to dance lead roles. Since that time no dancers have been trained to dance lead roles and professionals are hired to dance difficult roles. Very sad to see this school fail at its mission.
Monica Sams: My brother and sister both go to this dance school and have had a good experience.
Susan Kay: Southold Dance Theater
Shmigglebargin McGiggens: The only good dance school in the area. It seems that we are the only ones who work. All the other schools I've seen are lame. Southold is the way to go!

Debbie Werbrouck School of Dance & Music: what do users think?
Stephanie Wojtkowski: My daughter has been dancing at DWSD for 9 years. She loves the teachers, the friends she has made over the years, and the ability to learn many styles of dance. I have been very impressed with the strategies DWSD has used to keep my daughter safe during COVID. I feel feel safe sending her and am so happy that while so many things in her life are virtual right now she has the chance to physically go to dance class. Thank you DWSD for giving my daughter a wonderful dance experience!
Joanna Jefferson: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,QualityDWSD is great! My daughter's teachers are talented and creative, they foster a wonderful environment of collaboration, and encourage all of the students to push themselves to be better dancers in a supportive and safe way. Thank you!!
Yun Ling: The rate is very expensive, but I am fine with it as long as they took good care of the teaching as well as the performance experience every year. But this year, covid-19, I totally understand they change the class to virtue class, but for the performance, they also use the virtue and don't want to refund any expense on the cost of the dress. The dress is very expensive and could only be used once! But this year, it is not even used once! They should have some kind of recycle program, this is really waste one year after one year. They don't think any to their customer, only think about how to earn more money. Several of our parents already discussed together about this recently that we won't join their class this year, and will not even after this pandemic. Their philosophy is not education, but money! You are the business, I am the customer! What ever you did before and now is for your business which is included in your budget. The budget is from your profit of this year and can also be extended to the years before. Are you a non-profit business?? NO, like another reviewer said" you are a Money hungry". Business is the one who provide service to their customer and customer makes payment for the service. The virtue performance is not the service that we were promised to offer!. It is true the current situation is not expected, but why you want the customer to take 100% responsibility for this unexpected thing??? why??? OK, ok, you don't have to answer, and I don't want to see any of your explanation. If I thought maybe some day I would go back to your school, now, after seeing your reply, I would never go back. It is true, you have your own freedom to choose the way you operate your business, the same, me and my friends also have our option and freedom not to receive your "perfect service"!!!
Karianne Dunifin: I can’t say anything about their dance school but I can say that they don’t care about their customers who buy from their boutique!I bought a pair of tap shoes from them about a week ago. I found a pair that fit me on clearance and I was excited about that! Who wouldn’t be?? She had mentioned that I would not be able to return them which I was fine with because why would I need to? But keep in mind, that is ALL she said.I went to my dance class, first time ever wearing the shoes and one of the heels snaps off... within the first 20 minutes of class! I called them because obviously that’s not okay? The person who answered the phone had said “They were on clearance for a reason, buy some glue and it SHOULD stay for you.”(The heel was not broken in the store)You’re kidding, right? So now when I buy something on clearance that still costed me $25, I’m expected to know that they could break? After the first class? After the first 20 minutes?Terrible customer service and frankly they just don’t care about YOU! Not to mention, false advertisement?? If you knew there could be a problem with the shoes, why was nothing ever said to me? Because I would’ve just spent the extra $20 on a non-defective shoe!!! But now because they refuse to do anything to help me, I have to either 1. go buy glue and risk the heel breaking again or 2. go buy a SECOND pair and waste the $25 I spent on these because apparently I was supposed to know they could break AFTER THE FIRST 20 MINUTES OF WEARING THEM.This was my first time visiting but this experience told me everything I needed to know about Debby Werbrouck. Money hungry. If this is what their boutique is like, I would hate to see how their dance classes are ran. Must be a nightmare. 100% don’t recommend.
Jedadiah Heavner: Friendly staff who truly care for their students
Evan Claudeanos: Very well organized. My daughter took ballet, jazz, and tap classes there starting when she was three and loved the school and her teachers. She and my son were also students at the accompanying preschool, Academy Arts, and felt very much at home there. I recommend both the dance school and the preschool wholeheartedly.
Allison Doctor: I absolutely love dancing at Debbie Werbrouck’s! The dance instructors are extremely talented and dedicated to their students, and the environment is very welcoming.
Bri Feltz: I have grown up dancing at Debbie Werbroucks and I have had nothing but positive experiences! I highly recommend this dance studio to everyone looking for a well rounded dance studio.
Jaden r: I’ve been dancing here since I was 3 and I’ve loved every day of it!!
Keshava Mysore: My daughter just started her preschool here. A simple learning environment
Lauren Bergstrand: This studio is a wonderful place to study dance! The community that works and studies here is awesome. I fell in love with dance at this studio, and it has been one of the great blessings in my life!
C Bergstrand: This was a wonderful educational experience for my girls. I highly recommend this school of dance.
Elizabeth Megyese: Debbie Werbrouck's School of Dance is not only a top notch dance and music school but also became and has remained a major positive place in my life. The faculty is top notch from the office staff to the teachers. They offer Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, and Modern. DWSD offers growth opportunities which include a performing dance group, Christopher's Christmas as well as travel opportunities to dance overseas! DWSD is second to none!
Haley M: I grew up dancing at Debbie Werbrouck's School of Dance (taking classes there from 4 years of age to 18 years). Until late middle school, dance was a hobby. It was fun, mentally stimulating, and kept me active. As a child with virtually no depth perception and therefore no ability to throw, catch, and kick, Debbie's gave me the opportunity to engage in a "team" activity that encouraged practice and and self-discipline without making me feel like I was responsible for a loss or like I had failed. Even as a young child, I was being taught so much more than just great technique. At Debbie Werbrouck's, I learned self and spatial awareness, critical thinking skills, and personal morale and manners. My mom still reminds me about the ways in which she saw my early dance training at Debbie's aid me outside of the studio. For example: my kindergarten report card read "Haley is a good cookie with good posture." and 14 out of my 26 letters in my Alphabet Autobiography had to do with the dance studio. The atmosphere at Debbie's, especially as I got older and began to take more classes, gave me a second family. The older students and junior company members were some of my biggest role models growing up. I watched them train at the studio, be accepted into great colleges or get professional dance work, and carry themselves very differently than most teenagers were apt to. They fulfilled the roles of older siblings by offering advice and care as student demonstrators and helpers at recitals and even went so far as to help with homework at the studio on Saturdays (3 classes on Saturdays plus Christopher's Christmas rehearsals). The instructors never failed to give individual attention. Julie Bodle (instructor and assistant director) was like a second mom to me and was a huge rock (along with Debbie and the rest of the faculty) when my parents divorced. Jaci Mullins is largely responsible for my personal successes in dance, spending extra time outside of classes to research and help me apply for summer intensives and college dance programs.***I am now a year out of college and out of all of the times I've been able to visit home, there has only been maybe once or twice that I didn't make it by the studio to see my second family - and that's really only because it's a holiday and the studio is closed! Haha!***Late middle school was when I decided that I wanted to pursue dance as a career and Debbie Werbrouck's School of Dance gave me every tool I needed to do it. In high school, I was spending 30+ hours dancing. I was the varsity captain of my school's dance team, serving at a restaurant, studying, training, and teaching at Debbie's and graduated 11th in my class. My parents' friends were questioning why they would let their "smart" daughter go to college to dance. My parents, as the amazing supporters they are, would say "you're right, she's smart, and we know she'll make things work." They knew that they (and Debbie's) instilled in me a sense of self-discipline that would enable me to do what I love and support myself. Now, after graduating in four years with a B.S in Kinesiology and Dance and a certificate in Journalism from Indiana University, we know that they were right. I am currently living in Chicago, dancing for three companies - one of which iI founded myself and is currently being incorporated, teaching dance for a University of Chicago Charter school, an after-school program, and Kenwood School of Ballet, and running educational programming for a third consecutive summer. I absolutely love what I do and am able to support myself (and even pay off student loans)!I know for a fact that I would not be where I am, as happy as I am, if it weren't for Debbie Werbrouck's School of Dance. I've seen as a dancer, a young woman, and an educator how useful dance education can be in a child's life. I've now taken class and taught for many different studios/programs in the midwest and in NYC and have never been a part of programming as well-rounded and professionally run as Debbie Werbrouck's School of Dance.
Molly Mcgee: They are great but expensive, but I guess you get what you pay for... Can not beat the recitals they do hands down!
