South Bend, Indiana: what do users think?
Tenise Jones: Great train station
Mare: This is the most inefficient train station I have ever experienced. Though as helpful as they can be, the staff are not Amtrak employees (rather contractors of an independent agency) and therefore do not have access to critical information about train status, cancellations, etc., causing poor communication with travelers (not ideal when traveling is already stressful enough!). There are no ticket sales or luggage storage at this location, and the luggage scale has been out of service each time I've boarded here. The station is small and dated with a dimly-lit parking lot located in an inconvenient part of town. Boarding requires hauling your luggage up an incline to the tracks without any accessibility assistance to do so. Amtrak could do much better for their customers by giving this station some desperately-needed maintenance and updates.
Kelly Contine: The gentleman working this morning was extremely helpful and friendly . I only wish I caught his name . I really appreciate that this station checks tickets and keeps passengers updated on scheduling etc . I had a great experience and the gentleman went above and beyondGreat job south bend !
Randall Lee: worthless employee I dont even know why there is anyone there.they should just send their paycheck to the house.I called there for 8 hrs. and they would not answer the phone.
Prakash Nallathamby: Do not take amtrak from South bend. Booked a trip to DC on a Saturday. It was supposed to leave at 9 pm in summer. The train kept getting delayed till it said it will come at 1040 pm which is after dark. Now there is no station, the lone building was locked, nobody to help, and absolutely no indication of which track goes to DC. There was a bus stop like shelter which had broken glass and rusted iron pegs to keep you company. Absolutely not worth it and definitely not a safe neighbhorhod to be in after dark. Absolute embarrassment. The only positive was that I was able to cancel the ticket at 930 pm and I got a 80% refund.
Abby Buell DeBoni: DEFINITELY do not consider taking the Amtrak to Chicago (or really, anywhere else, but my only experience is Chi). Someone told me that this would be a faster option than the South Shore train. IT IS NOT. I bought tickets that said my trip would be 1hr 29min. Great. Except the trains NEVER depart on time, and once they do, they spend a TON of time just sitting on the tracks, not moving at all, waiting for freight trains to pass. My short trip took 1hr 20 min additional time, and my return trip took an additional 2+ hrs on top of the 1.5 it was supposed to have been. I have learned that this is a regular occurrence with every train, but at the time I didn't know and was super mad.
Rian Johnson: Never again
SaVonne Wiley-Cupit: South bend is a quiet town, it's a good place to retire. But if you are about the hustle and bustle of life, you probably should find a bigger city. Oh and you need to be a driver especially during the winter
supaskiido music: Thanks. According to my little research about the place. Its quiet a good place to live at and even love the life style over there. Hope to to like there forever for the rest of my life.
Dana H: Never again! Took the train from Chicago to Southbend. First of all the train broke down, we were supposed to arrive at midnight, we finally arrived at 2:30. Once we got to Southbend it was so late that there were no Uber, Lyft , taxi or hotel transportation. Four of us were left stranded and the only employee was getting ready to close the station. Thankfully that employee went out of his way to give us a ride to our hotel. Secondly there was no communication about how to board the train and only 2 employees trying to direct a bazillion people.Second trip was worse, no Amtrak employee at the station and train was 4.5 hrs late.
Jeanette Jordan: Very nice tranquil place. No anxiety for me. Face mask required but place is clean . I love the sunset that I saw when I was waiting for my train . Cute little place .
Kevin Feeney: Far from downtown
Christopher Buzbee: Girlfriend showed up to to catch her train. To say the ticket agent at the (micky) is inept at her job is an understatment . First she tried to say the could only accept cash for checking the luggage. A phone call to a amtrak customer service rep the ticket agent was told to accept the credit card and check the luggage. The ticket agent then refussed to answer any other questions about the train being an hour late , estimated arrival time of late train anything. When my girlfriend informed the ticket agent that the train was almost there and asked about her bag the ticket agent told her to leave the bag in a area and the ticket agent would get it on the train. This entire time it sounded as if the ticket agent was on a personal phone call in the office. Needless to say say the Agent never left the office , luggage didnt get up on the train and was left at the station. As soon as my girlfriend realized what happened . I immediate called the station and talked to the Agent (micky) who tried to say that my girlfriend had forgotten her bag, which I know was false as I was on video call the entire time she was at the station. I told the agent this , she put me on hold , then hung up the phone. I teied calling back several times trying to resolve issue . Agent would answer and hang up . was informed condutor was trying to call and was getting same. My final impression : the agent tried to charge cash, so she could pocket it. when that didnt work she made sure to make it difficult on my girlfriend by not putting the bag on the correct train. Impolite, unprofessional and needs to be promoted to customer
Krishna Chaitanya: A simple station.
Kelly S: Small station with comfortable waiting area and more than enough space. Bathrooms are small and sometimes a bit dirty but usable. Staff is always very friendly and accommodating. They provided assistance to my disabled mother by giving her a ride to the train car to ensure she got on okay. I saw some people leave their cars there for a few days while they're gone. I'm not sure I would do that with the type of neighborhood that is nearby.
Jenni Dicken: I think the waiting area should be 24 hours that way people who have to drive for hours to get there have a warm place to wait when it cold or on hot days have a place to sit to keep cool
Eileen Sullivan: We had the pleasure of arriving here after a 20+ hour ride and were greeted by a smiling, helpful and competent employee by the name of Nancy! So rare to come across and yet she acted like it was her pleasure to be there. Thank you from the Sullivans 😊
Michael Fugate: South bend has a lot of rough neighborhoods, beat down streets, and dilapidated buildings. There are some nice plazas, and some nice parks but all in all this town needs a great deal of work.
Tiffany Melton: I live here
Reg Johnson: The Amtrack Staff at South Bend are very conscientious, helpful and pleasant. The station is not large or new, but it is comfortable and meets all the needs. I really like this station!
albert Sancho: The ride was comfortable and nice.
