Brain Lair Books: what do users think?
J Cross: I love this bookstore! Good location, peaceful atmosphere and wonderful alternative selection of books & gifts. Support local small businesses ♥️
Joe Kennedy: A nice place. Had some books that weren't seen at Barnes and Noble. The staff was friendly and even recommended a nice coffee place!! Definitely would recommended 👌
Adam Baumgartner: Incredibly thoughtful curation of books for all ages. An absolute treasure in the neighborhood. And a resource for people who don’t always see themselves in “the classics.”
S R: Yawn. If you're looking for something reflective, deep, or enduring to read, look elsewhere. If you're looking for utter conformity to the latest fads and in-your-face political evangelism, this is your bookstore.
Mr E: Great place to get books written by various American culture.
Lynn Prest: This is my favorite place to hang out in South Bend!!? Kathy is a beautiful person.. the customers and neighborhood are beautiful. It is a great atmosphere for our children and me in my alone time.
karly hanson: The store is every reader’s dream! What a great, diverse selection. You can tell it’s curated with a lot of love.
Ashley E.: I love this book store. Kathy's book recommendations are always excellent, and really got me through the pandemic. After shopping online for a while, I finally had the chance to visit in person. The space is fantastic, especially the reading nook castle. The wide selection for every age and reading taste provides something for everyone. I look forward to visit again (and loading up on tons of books) soon.
Priece Rich: New business...Great collection of children's books, fiction and non-fiction for adult reading. Will attempt special orders if book requested is still in print. A must visit for all readers..
Debbie B: This store is a dream! I've never experienced a bookstore that was so filled with inclusive books. Queer, black, brown, and immigrant people are represented throughout. Everywhere I looked was a new delight!Kelly was super helpful in finding books for us, and the entire shopping experience was lovely. I am so grateful we found this sweet little store!
Lynn Ward: I just love me some Miss Kathy!!!❤❤❤
Abe Roll: This is my new go-to place for books. I love being able to support an independent Hoosier business, but especially a Black- and woman-owned business. They have a huge selection, the prices are solid, and shipping has so far been speedy (a miracle during the strange times of COVID). I recommend also signing up for their emails - lots of informative and engaging events and resources in there!
Julia Tucker: I ordered a book online for a friend's birthday from Brain Lair Books last month and requested they include a note from me along with it. Brain Lair Books went through the time and effort to both ensure that the book was shipped in time to arrive for my friend's birthday, and sent my note along with a handwritten card separately. I really appreciate the extra effort they put in, and will definitely be ordering again from them in the future. I look forward to visiting them in person if I'm ever in South Bend!
Stevie Frank: Quaint little bookstore got everything I need
Anna Barncord: I haven't had the joy or pleasure to come to the actual store, but I've been lucky enough to order online and get everything I need in a timely manner. The website is great, the selection is huge, the ordering process has been easy. I got my limited time signed book quicker than I expected! This is a great bookshop.
LISA HENDRICKS: I was about to order a book online from Amazon and in the reviews it suggested black owned bookstores. I saw that there was one in South Bend, close but I decided to order online. I received the book in about a week! I would love to visit the store once the world is better.Bought the book GLORY Magical Visions of Black Beauty by Kahran and Regis Bethencourt. I love this book! I love that it was easy to order and that it was from a Black owned/small business! I’ll be ordering from this store again.
Taylor Barstow: Speedy, breezy customer experience! I was looking for a Black-owned bookstore (ideally womxn-owned) which carried the title I was looking for and this was just the ticket! The site is super easy to navigate and I ordered the book I wanted from San Francisco because she ships to wherever you are in the continental US. Ordered late at night on Saturday, was happy to only pay media mail shipping ($3.95 I think - she doesn’t gauge you on shipping fees) and it shipped on Monday. I received multiple email communications during that time to let me know where in the process my order was which was very thoughtful. Definitely will shop here again!
Darrell Sanders: Good place to get good books - some not readily available anywhere else.
Alex Giorgio: THE place to go for books in South Bend. The shop is a fun, warm environment with a collection of carefully chosen books.
Tami Anglemyer: Love the variety of books they offer
Maximum RobespierreXVII (Max): Good selection of graphic novels. Looked like they were not quite entirely set up when I was there (the back room was empty) but definitely worth checking out.

Vanessa Cales: Love it. So peaceful
John Gladden: The staff here are always very helpful and friendly.
Marcus: Very overpriced.
Rachel Eaton: Got what I needed.
James Kauzlarich: The bookstore is underground between Northside Hall and the library. You can reach the bookstore from both Northside Hall and the library by going to the basement and taking the tunnel that runs between the two.All the books and supplies here are expensive, look online first.
Ricky Vega: Do not buy books there. Always look for books online first before you buy them here.

Griffon Bookstore: what do users think?
Rob Monroe: The Griffon has a fantastic selection of board games, role playing games, and books both new and used. They also have a huge amount of miniatures, both for fantasy games and historic wargames. This store is one of my favorite spots in downtown South Bend.
Thomas Moore: Walked in and we could tell we weren’t gonna be here long. Mostly comprised of board games and dark occultist items. Books in the basement but not anything worth buying or reading. Not sure why they even call this a bookstore. It should be called a board game shop with unwanted books in the basement. Not coming here again.
brandon k: Nerd nirvana
Aaron Rosheck: Great place! Nice atmosphere and friendly service. I have been here many times over the years and I plan to make more visits in the future.Highly recommend buying your miniatures, dice, books, and board games from local places like Griffon.
Robert Kerr: Great variety of board games, tabletop role-playing games, historical miniatures, and books. They even have a section in the basement for used and discounted board games. Staff has always been friendly and helpful whenever I was there. I usually drop in if I have the chance.
Tristan Witt: They host public game nights on Fridays! Great selection and good suggestions from staff if needed.
James Munoz (SaltLight7): The absolute best place for all types of board games. And the staff is always knowledgeable and friendly.
Bill Swathwood: Great selection books, board games and role-playing supplies
Ashley: Use to come here all the time and buy board games. I always dealt with a woman and had no problem but the old gentleman has been there the past few times I’ve gone. Today I wanted to sell some games and I brought 10 games in that totaled over several hundred dollars in retail value. Of course I recognize that I’m not gonna get anywhere near retail but the amount I was offered was a waste of time and insulting. He was wanted to offer $50 for 10 games. If you know about board games the average price of a game is $40–$60 so he wanted my ten games for the cash price of 1. Of course we told him no then he had the nerve to offer us $40 for 3 of the games and expected to give us $1.57 each for the remaining 7 😂 what a waste of time. I’m all about supporting local businesses but from now on I’ll stick to Amazon where their games are cheaper anyway.
Tom Vogl: Icon of an independent bookstore that's kept its identity since the 1970s. Dover classics, games and used books. Staff is knowledgeable and engaging. It just feels good being there.
Hannah Kunz: Stumbled into Griffon one day and was amazed at their immense amount of board games! Had a great time wandering around and taking it all in.
Jason Steven: One of the best, if not the very best, local game stores around. They have card games, board games, RPG's, books, and more. The owner is a wonderful person who is pleasant and knowledgeable. I love this place and can't recommend it highly enough.
Deen Tuggle: Lovely little games and book store in downtown South Bend. Wide range of board games and a nice selection of books downstairs. Very nice and friendly staff as well.
Eric (Beave): Such a cool spot. Had used books and games, very fun place. Had a ton of new games and dice. Very friendly staff.
Bryan Aker Jr: Great used book selection. They also have quite the supply of ttrpg supplies.
Michael Duttlinger: The staff is amazing. The selection is great.
Cory Gehring: I love this local bookstore. The owner is always happy to help people look for a game, book, or accessory/mini. Very friendly. Great for getting your children into gaming.
uppity woman: Great customer service
Dmitriy Y: Nice, local game store. Good selection and good decor.
Matt Steigely: I absolutely love this place, great selection of board games and a few hard to find gems. They are so nice when i brings in the kiddos, the book store section downstairs has a great selection of used books. Also has all your Dungeons and Dragons needs, and tons of other table top rpgs.
Melody Muckenfuss: Board games, D&D, books... Do yourself a favor and go spend an afternoon browsing.

Barnes & Noble: what do users think?
Trish Bennett: This place is huge. Very comfortable surroundings, and you can also get something to eat & drink while your there. Pleasant staff to top it off.
Salem Dollanganger: Nice and organized
Michael Haines: While in the checkout line I watched the two older gentlemen at the registers laugh and joke with customers, which was cool. But when my turn came the cashier turned stone cold. Tossed my change back at me. Shoved the book I bought at me without a word. I believe (can't prove it obviously) his problem was the nature of the book I bought, which was of a particular political nature.
C. Cramer: The line is always super long to check-out. :/
Dan Pete: A booklovers paradise! By far the largest I've ever seen. Great place to spend an afternoon with a coffee and a great read.
Lazy Lotuz (Lozer): Love their young adults section. Staff was very kind and helpful. Always love Barnes & Noble.
Rich Morales: Ordered our favorite drinks and enjoyed them in the lobby.
Julio Cardona: Friendly staff and clean
Kipp Shinabarger: Very nice B&N. Thankfully they have new book selections, which our local one doesn’t have any more.
Jeremy: I am amazed at some of the bizarre books that were written by real people and actually published if you look in the right places (i.e. books with supposed "spells" you can cast in the self-transformation section). Wow we had a good laugh at some of this stuff
Joe Carter (MostDefJoSeph): Nice quiet place to escape to (usually) when at the mall. Great book selections. Starbucks inside. The only thing I wish they had was more seating!
Ryan Coutts: Couldn’t believe the price when I got to the check out. Really nice store - prices need to keep up with online retailers
DeAnna Ham: Although I really couldn’t find what I was interested in, Steve went above and beyond to help me find a great novel! Thanks Steve!
Jack Blankenbaker: Books, books, and more books and coffee!!!
Chris M. Payne: Oh this bookstore is phenomenal!!!So much to see and read!Love their faith section!Beautiful Bible selection and different faith based books to choose from also!
jontue myers: Didn't have what I was looking for in stock.
Michelle Gordon: A cashier threw my receipt at me. I thought it was in my head but when I got outside the store someone else pointed it out.
Sarah Veine: One of my favorite stores in the mall...
Tammy Venable: Prices too high.
Stephanie Handy: It used to be a great place for studying, browsing, reading and finding gifts. However they have since removed their study area, expecting patrons to sit at the tiny cafe tables by the Starbucks that are not as comfortable or conducive to concentrating and getting work done. It's actually sad that managers have rudely ushered people away from the unused (larger tables) they have clustered in the back of the shop. The lack of available tables and work/study space contributes to the deteriorating overall experience of what was once a busier and livelier environment.
Serafina Fiechtner: Genres of all sorts, and a variety of stocking stuffers, and a variety of toys and collectibles.

Hammes Notre Dame Bookstore: what do users think?
Dana Van Scoy: Anything Notre Dame - they have it! Even stuff you never thought of.
Tim Gobel: Great store. Excellent customer service!
William Rainey: Excellent place to pick up anything ND…prices could be lowered, but overall great place to shop.
Eddy Richards: Crazy busy on Football game days, much better in the spring during a lacrosse game. Always has such a nice selection to choose from. The employees are very helpful.
Darrin Young: Great experience
Alex Polzine: Absolutely outstanding for all of your " fighting Irish " needs.
Jaime Weaver: Huge bookstore where you can get all kinds of Notre Dame clothes and gifts
ManOMagik: Always nice to go in and check out the new gear! Expensive as usual...
Josh Chapman: Beautiful place!
Tony Strand (West Coast Screen): One of my favorite places to shop on the planet
Tim Gage: Go Irish?
Anette Freeman-Miller: Very pricey
Moreno Tomei: Beautiful store and campus.
Trent McLane: The selection is good, but the prices are high.
Bruno Sufka: Way too expensive to buy anything. Dont know how students can afford this place. Not for somebody looking for a notre dame souvenirs.
Raul E: Great staff, just be ready to open your wallet when shopping here. They have so many things to buy.
Joe Kopacz: Visiting the bookstore on the Notre Dame campus is definitely an experience unto itself and worth the trip as a part of a broader visit to the area. I came here recently as part of a trip to South Bend to take in a few ND hockey games over the weekend. What is perhaps most striking about this building is what isn't - in the sense that both the interior and exterior both very closely match the overall aesthetics of most of the buildings on campus. It's neither a negative nor positive to the overall shopping experience, just something worth noting about this place and the campus more broadly. The interior was well kept up and clean throughout. As mentioned in other reviews, much of the space on both floors is devoted to clothing. It is, however, not overly crowded and quite easy to navigate on the whole. My only complaint (and a small one at that) was I could not find a hockey sweater in my size. The staff were able to help me locate sweaters on the website for the bookstore, so I have future plans to purchase a sweater when they have the style I want I'm my size (I'm a big 3XL tall guy, fyi). It's definitely a normal part of visiting the campus to stop by the bookstore to check out the latest apparel. I'll likely stop by again on future trips to South Bend. Stay awesome, Notre Dame.
David Wilkinson: Super nice bookstore that keeps getting better. It's especially nice when there is a sale.
John Brobst: Just wish you could order and pay over phone plus have shipping
Chris Schuckman: Live this place. Everything you need and don't need!
Thomas Flickinger: It was amazing! So many options to choose from

Half Price Books: what do users think?
David Sprinkle: WE LOVE HALFPRICE BOOKS! I never leave empty handed. We make sure that we always stop here before going to any of the other book stores in the area.
J Edgington: Found books I've been looking for, half the price or less.
Nicky boi: I love HPB!! Selections are added pretty regularly and the prices can't be beat! Great for finding movies/books that are difficult to find. If you can't find what you're looking for, the people at the side desk are super helpful and can have the item you're looking for sent to you for a small fee if the item is in their system.
Rufus Ayres: We are moving and had a lot of old dad's and books to sell. They make it really easy, and we got enough cash to buy our dinner.
Shirley Zuroff: The best place to buy a book or two. Prices are excellent..
Dawn Carr: I have always had a great experience here. My only qualm is that I plan on buying one or two books but leave with 15. 😂
Gideon .Oberlin: Very nice, good prices
Kerry Hyde: Very nice associates that are helpful. Great selection of children's books.
Destinee C: Nice and clean store with a great selection!
Tim “Big T”: Great selection of metaphysical books.
Tia Rice: Since my previous review was deleted (sketchy much?), I am going to try again. I took in 7 books to sell and only received $10. I was in so much shock I didn’t even think to decline the offer. I take care of my books, all were in like-new or unread condition, and they came out within the past year. I would not recommend selling your books, or anything else, to this business. It is horrible they would take advantage of people like that, and it’s clear by the other one star reviews I am not the only one.
M B (OCTOMJBBER): Great service and selection, a little cheap on reselling items
Andrea _: I like that the books are cheaper. The selection is great. On some non-book items, it's obvious they don't know how much their worth. This can mean heavy underpricing or overpricing. However, on the selling side, the people behind the counter really don't know what they're doing. I literally tried to sell a book I had just bought from them as a test, and they said it wasn't in good enough condition to sell. They went into detail about the "damage." The prices for items they buy from you are always low.
Robert Kerr: They have a variety of books and used board games for sale, up to 50% depending. I found a few things at a great price. The last time I visited they had some Playboy magazines on display in the back corner. Might not be an issue for some adults, but I know others may be more sensitive about those kinds of things (myself included).
Zabuza655: I like the comic book and graphic novel sections
xXInsaneLoboXx: Great place to get books, comics, table top games and lots of other stuff always have good prices and new selections.
Carrie Wack: I love love love this store! I never walk out without buying anything.
Roberto C. Santos: I think they had more selections than Barnes and Nobles...lol
Cynthia Yankauskas: They always have something new, fairly priced; it's hard to leave here without a mountain of books.
Bill J Goodman: Great store but it seems that there prices are going up
Lyndon Veinot: Decent place to sell your old books and media
