Star Martial Arts: what do users think?
stAr ClUb: horbible don’t go here. they treat the kids bad and they won’t let you out of contract for any reason 0/10 do not recommend
Terra Szczypiorski: My daughter's absolutely favorite time is karate class! Teachers are amazing!
Marycris Gomez: It helps with discipline fitness and mental awareness
Sharon Perry: My daughter started at Star in South Bend in October 2021. She was super excited to start from the moment she met Mrs. Merrill b/c her excitement for TKW is contagious!. We signed our daughter up for the Black Belt Club and have seen progressive improvement every month. Ms. Cooper has been fantastic answering my never-ending questions about TKW, tournaments, classes and everything else that I don't know about TKW. :) The schedules are flexible and are pretty easy to work into our lives. I can't wait to see how she will continue to grow in self defense, physical fitness, leadership and self confidence as she works towards her Black Belt. Meeting other Star parents and teachers from the other two schools, it is quite obvious that the teaching style and values are carried between them all. Mrs. Merrill does a great job creating a fun and positive class while safely learning TKW. Thanks everyone, we love Star Martial Arts!!
Sonya Lamberth: The whole team is amazing. Everyone wants the best out of all students. They make you feel confident at all levels of ability.
TJ Binder: They need a bigger studio, but the staff and what they teach is great!
CandiDanyelle: Mrs. Merrill and Mrs. Cooper are great instructors. Our 5 y/o attends and he is doing wonders with following the rules in class which helps him to focus more in school and at home. Confidence wasn't an issue for him but we can see a great deal of pride and joy when he walks onto the mat. Mrs. Merrill helps him learn new moves, protective skills, and acknowledge and break away from stranger danger. Our boy attends 2 times a week. So great we joined 💕
William Bibbs Sr.: We enjoy Mrs. Merrill’s spirit and energy during our sons first Martial Arts classes ever. Definitely recommend this class to any child looking for a safe way to learn discipline and self defense and also awareness. So grateful we signed Jr. up!
Renee Kime: Mrs. Merrill and Mrs. Cooper are the best. I trust my kids with them 100%. They only have their best interests in mind. My children are learning not only how to defend themselves but they are learning respect, discipline and how to treat others. They are held accountable at home, class and school. I am so greatful that my children have the opportunity to be a part of this spectacular group of people.
Eugene Knight: I take my son here every week, at least twice a week. Mrs. Merrill is the best instructor. She always has so much energy and enthusiasm and clearly loves what she does. She is patient, yet firm with her students, teaching discipline and self control. Her technique embodies the spirit of martial arts and she serves as a role model for her students to emulate.
Kory: Small space that doesn’t have nearly enough chairs for parents, often times leading to lots of people being forced to stand. Overcrowded back-to-back classes with no cleaning or mat sanitization in between. Keep in mind that once you’re on a contract, there’s no backing out. Even in the case of major life changes such as a medical problem affecting the family, you will receive no refund or sympathy.Three stars, only because the instructor is great.
Randee Tjapkes: Mrs. Cooper has been helpful from day 1 (started Nov 2021). She has answered all of my questions about the program available and how to best support my student.Mrs. Merrill is a wonderful instructor. It's fun to watch her engage with all of the students in class each week. The values, life skills, and training that is taught has helped transform my student and supports what I teach at home. I enjoy being called to help practice moves with my student during class to make sure I know how to best help him practice at home. Some things that we have improved in our 3.5 months in include self control, doing what you're supposed to do, listening, following direction, self defense, fitness, and so much more. I HIGHLY recommend calling to have a consultation to learn more about the program. We had no prior experience and he fit right in.
Rebecca Cooper: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,Value
Khawla B: Critical:Communication,Professionalism,Value
Nathan Merrill: Positive:Communication,ProfessionalismLove the values they teach to students. Very professional and polite staff and instructors.
Ron Strzelecki: I am thoroughly impressed with the people at Star. They provide a safe, positive place for children and adults to achieve their full potential. The physical benefit is only a part of what students get here. The instructors foster growth in many areas of the students' lives. Not only do they engage the kids and adult students with great energy, they also involve parents in the lessons. My child and I are both getting a benefit from the instructors on a daily basis.Their schedule is flexible, making it easy for busy households to fit class time in their schedules.
Quenita Brown: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueThis place is amazing.
Seth Birky: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality

Fuson's Eclectic Martial Arts & Jeet Kune Do Academy: what do users think?
Mark Herriman: I have trained here for several years. I started as an adult and wanted something reality based. I feel like I am learning realistic approaches that change the way you move and think of a combat scenario. This place is not a "belt factory" but instead teaches real world arts like kenpo/kalsadapo, filipino martial arts, and jeet kune do. You don't rank up if you can't do the technique without prompting and in a realistic situation- and I really like that. You can get a black belt with a weekend seminar elsewhere- but it will take several years here. The class is full of nice folks who are not just full of testosterone and ego.
Chris Sautter: I have trained in both Kali and Jeet Kune Do with Sifu Fuson and his school is great.

Star Martial Arts: what do users think?
Alyssa Hull: Please please please read the contract in its entirety before you sign!
Caroline Bradford: My daughter initially liked going. The problem became when she had a major health issue. Hospitalization and then follow ups with Riley doctors. They don’t let anyone out of the contracts even with valid reasons. Another thing that always rubbed me the wrong way was every week end of class they would announce an upcoming event to the kids to get them excited and to “remind parents” and of course that extra event or parents night out would cost more money even for being a “member. “The contracts are unreasonable do not sign one unless your truly sure you can handle the expense even when you or your child physically cant attend anymore. Do your research plenty of other places to attend in the community that are just as kind, and caring and properly educating /training and doesn’t even cost half of this place or require contracts. Run as fast as you can away from this place.many people have thousands in debt because they were unfairly not allowed to break contracts
Irish 454: Do not get involved with this place unless you wanted ripped off out of your money!
Matt Jackson: While it may be an expensive choice, what my 7 year old has learned here is worth so much more. It’s really made a positive impact in his life.
Bonnie Campbell: We've been attending SMA for 5 months now. This decision was an excellent one for my grandson. He looks forward to going to each class. He has learned what focus, confidence and respect means. We are so prouds of him and the compliments we receive about his manners and confidence. Will we continue with SMA? Absolutely. If you are looking for something to help your child grow in a positive and constructive way. I would say give SMA a try.We have been attending for two months my grandson loves it. The instructors are very professional and attentive to the progression of each student. I would highly recommend this school to parents who want to take the child to a higher level of discipline, respect and communication.
Debra Bauer: My granddaughter loves coming here. Great confidence building and learning respect. Warm and welcoming team at the Mishawaka location. Definitely recommend
Nana Jones: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueWe absolutely love Star Martial Arts!!!! The instructions are so amazing!! We love them all! ❤
Lauren Riggs: Positive:Communication,Professionalism,QualityMy son has been attending Star for almost 4 years now. I absolutely love the classes, instructors, and the support with discipline, respect, and confidence. I highly recommend Star Martial Arts.
Bryan Allen: Great place and lessons.
Andi Holst: I have reached out quite a few times. No one has responded. Our child signed up for the Mishawaka location. Now they have a South Bend location that is 5 mins from us. Since we joined, schedules have changed, our sitter who was taking our son to classes has a heart attack, we no longer can make it to class unless it is switched locations. They will not call us back and after finally talking to someone via FB, they said they could not allow for a transfer. So I have been paying 150 a month for nothing!!!!!!!
Yamo: Critical:Communication,Professionalism,Quality,ValueTerrible place! You pay a crazy amount of money for no one on one time unless you purchase a private lesson. They pitch all of their events to the kids which are expensive instead of just letting the parents know about them. Seems like all they care about is getting as many people in the door as possible to make money.
Jacob Ashley: Star Martial Arts and its amazing team of instructors provided a safe space for me and pushed me to grow in all areas of my life. If you or your children are looking to grow in your leadership, confidence, discipline, physical fitness, or self-defense ability, or are interested in making friends and having fun while staying active, please consider giving Star a call!
Jasona Sioson: My youngest just did the free class and we signed up for the 3 year black belt program. I was very impressed with everything, prices and teachers. I highly recommend!
Oisin Dietrich: Critical:Communication,ProfessionalismRachel The owner will nickel and dime you to death. The instructors there are great but the owner is all about the money Careful for all the hidden charges.
Rodney Thompson: Star Martial Arts has been nothing less than a blessing in my Life! Mr. Birky (Owner & Instructor) has helped me move forward towards my goals and teaching me good life lessons. Not even just in Taekwondo but in my personal life as well, He and his wife have helped in anyway they can to help me through my struggles weather it was struggling with memorizing my moves and forms or even coming down to money related issues. One of the other Instructors (Mr. Morgan) is a stand up guy and will teach you and also make you laugh and smile. Star Martial Arts is a Life Changer and should be know to all to come and join us in the fun, laughter, challenges and tournaments! It's Nothing less than a 5 Star General!! Come check it out!
Kathleen Totty: I had the great pleasure of attending my granddaughter's orientation session with my daughter and son-in-law this evening. The instructor/owner was wonderful! I had no had idea that Taekwondo is more than physical activity. It also teaches self-discipline, confidence, respect, self-defense and so much more. I'm so happy that my granddaughter will have this training which I believe will help her so much in life.
amelia smith: We LOVE Star Martial Arts!!! It is like a family here. All of the instructors show so much kindness and help each person in excelling to their next level. We are amazed at how our son has become more confident in himself. He has learned what it means to be disciplined in something. His ability to concentrate and focus on something has grown so much (he is only seven). I would highly recommend Star for ALL ages. There is a community here like nothing else I have seen. Our family is so grateful to be a part of it. Come check them out! I promise you will be grateful you did.
Lisa Sheridan: We have been a part of Star for over 2 1/2 years now, and I can honestly say we had no idea what a blessing Star would be for our son. When he started, we brought him because you were close and our next door neighbor’s child came to Star. Our son idolized him and so we just thought it would be fun for him, and he would probably also learn some discipline along the way.We could not have been more ignorant of what all of you do every day at Star. Of course, our son enjoys Taekwondo.  He loves class.  He especially loves practicing his kicks and board breaks. He loves showing off how much he has learned to family and friends. And we love seeing his physical progress. But, honestly, your encouragement with his internal struggles with discipline at school or home are where Star has shined.  He knows he cannot advance in Taekwondo if he is not improving and advancing at school/home, and it constantly motivates him to try and do better. Our son is an extraordinarily confident, intelligent, and independent minded boy. These traits can cause him to not show proper respect for authority. I truly believe that through his love for Taekwondo and his intense desire to earn your respect, these sometimes difficult traits will continue to mold into positive aspects of his personality that will help him succeed as an adult.
Lauren Stalvey: Star Martial Arts has been amazing for our son. You can tell a huge difference in his confidence and skill in the months that we have been attending. They have also been wonderful at including our whole family in fun events!

Gracie Jiu Jitsu South Bend: what do users think?
Tim Hutchinson: I only wish I had found this gym, these owners, and these coaches sooner. Truly a great place for beginners to learn. It is great for kids and adults and I cannot say enough great things about this place. If you are looking for a place to train and learn or are on the fence, try the 10 day trial and see for yourself.
K W: My kids have been a part of the Academy for a couple of years. It is a great family oriented place to be a part of and teaches skills that will help a child navigate problems they may encounter. Also if your an adult wanting to try it out or somebody who is looking for some serious BJJ training you can find that on their mats too.Good Luck!
Jason Craft: These guys are amazing. The whole crew is so kind and welcoming. I've had all 3 of my kids there for years and have been taking lessons and attending classes myself. Definitely worth the time and money as a family investment.Update: gym culture is important and it's fantastic here. Full of respect and generosity for everyone, regardless where they're at on their journey, size, gender, or beliefs. Everyone is welcome. Not just from the twins and family, but from other students too.
Jeremy Smithes: I couldn't recommend this place more. The culture is very welcoming and the instructors are absolutely brilliant.
Nelson Salgado: The Entire McGuin family and staff are high quality people. They make you feel like family and their passion for the art of JiuJitsu is evident. Not only is their instruction awesome, but the community they have built alone.... is worth it. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND! (I drove regularly from Saginaw MI to attend this school, luckily for me - they opened a new location just 2.5 hours away from my house!)
John Fuller: I had the pleasure of doing a drop in class with the McGuin brothers and absolutely loved it. The brothers' are extremely knowledgeable and use easy to understand instructions in class. They, as well as their students, made me feel like part of their family the moment I walked into the school. I would absolutely recommend training here.
David Raynoha: Very professional and friendly a great place to learn and grow
Virginia Olson: Jiu jitsu has been a challenge for me, but the instructors at McGuin have been extremely supportive. They are so good at breaking down complex moves into a series of step-by-step actions. Also there is a great community of students who are always willing to help.
Samuel McGraw: I live and train in Denver but was in South Bend for the month visiting family and couldn't have asked for a better school to keep my skills sharp. John and Thomas do an amazing job fostering a mutually respectful, positive and constructive environment to learn self defense through bjj. They are very friendly and I felt immediately welcomed. I get the sense that they try to make every one who comes there feel that way and try to build people up to give them confidence, not only in they're ability to defend themselves, but confidence in themselves as a person. Everyone that I trained with there seems to carry the same positive attitude when it comes to training and are trying to make you better as well as themselves.Techniques are taught simply and effectively with plenty of drilling and oversight from instructors and higher belts to ensure confidence in your understanding of the techniques. To be honest, I kind of wish my regular academy had a similar style. I was mostly there to get some good sparring so I wasn't a normal student but as far as I could tell they keep have a foundational curriculum that tracks techniques taught to students and tests on these, giving regulars a tangible idea of they're progress, which I really like.I don't know when I will be back in South Bend, but I think it's safe to say that the next time I am, I will be getting my rolls at McGuin!
Benito Medina: The best decision I made was signing up at McGuin Jiu Jitsu! If you are looking to join a Jiu Jitsu academy, this is the place!!!
Gabriel Buss: Awesome people! The coaches really care about their students. My girls love it.
antonio thiele: Great atmosphere, awesome coaches, clean facility. All around great experience.
Bob Backus: The best place for adults and kids to study the art of jiu-jitsu in the purest form.
natalia peña: Excelente, grandioso lugar!! Volveré sin pensarlo dos veces! 🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
brandon adolf: Amazing academy with an even better culture! John and Thomas are amazing instructors that teach Gracie Jiu jitsu geared towards self defense. Great group of guys and gals in the adult class, Everyone is very welcoming and eager to give you any tips and tricks. Whether you are brand new to Jiu jitsu, ex wrestler looking for no Gi or higher belt. This academy offers it all. Cant say enough about how great the culture and instruction is! If you are curious about trying out jiu jitsu for yourself or getting a child involved then come check out McGuin’s I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
Ian Operator: I can't say that I've trained there before, but I saw the viral video of them outting a BJJ fraud claiming to be a purple belt, and instead of taking an aggressive approach with it, they were kind to him after owning him a few times on the mat and actually offered him to actually train there and earn a real belt instead of going around being a punk fraud all his life. Most gyms and dojos I've been in would beat him up pretty good and scolded him pretty hard before even thinking about offering him to train and learn the real thing. That shows a lot of character.
A&M Home Services: Have 7 kids doing private classes . Kids Love the instructors John and Hannah!
Travis Bess: Positive:Professionalism1 class was all it took to get me hooked. welcoming and knowledgeable people!
