It was a great Wednesday afternoon @ Methodist on Aug. 7th! We learned about the public speaking journey of three of IU Health’s top leaders: President & CEO, Dennis Murphy; EVP & COO Dr. Michelle Janney and EVP & Chief of Staff Kevin Armstrong. I joined Toastmaster, primarily, as a result of a toastmaster who convinced me that the practice of public speaking was much more than a notion, more than I could have imagined and what I needed. I learned that the mechanics of public speaking is far more than what I knew. Prior to joining, I wondered what would happen if a news reporter on the streets of Indianapolis suddenly put a mic in my face with a question. For instance, “if you could imagine yourself as president what would be your focus and why?” The world would be watching. How would I manage that? What would be the internal mechanism that insure my absolute best response to the question? Would I have the patience to take the time to repeat the question and allow the question to sit with me and then respond with thoughtfulness, creativity, and imagination? Toastmasters created a space for us to develop a response- ability. I believe that the template for the meeting and the responsibilities for each role during a meeting prepares us to be able to respond to the many ways we find ourselves on the stage of life. You have just been invited to the awkward party! Toastmasters creates a confidence to be able to thrive in those encounters fostering genuine dialogue and engagement. I am confident that my development as a toastmaster helped me a great deal in achieving confidence and connection with the community I serve.
